Canadian Club – Matthew Boswell

November 25, 2020 By Clive Tonge

Virtual Event: Matthew Boswell

Canada’s Commissioner of Competition

” Opportunity in the Face of Challenge: A Competitiveness Agenda for Canada’s Future “

Nov 25, 2020

Competition is what drives businesses to develop innovative products, increase the quality of their offerings, and improve affordability for consumers. Historically, that has been the Competition Bureau’s focus. Now however, with the advent of COVID-19, we must also consider how competition can play a strategic role in Canada’s economic recovery. The need for a strong focus on competition, and on the well-being of Canada’s small- and medium-sized businesses is even more striking as we navigate this global crisis.

Join Canadian Club Toronto to hear Canada’s Commissioner of Competition, Matthew Boswell, talk about the Bureau’s role in safeguarding competition, and advocating for procompetitive regulation in the context of a global pandemic. After his remarks, Mr. Boswell will sit down with Christine Dobby (The Globe and Mail) for a fireside chat.

Biography:

Matthew Boswell, Canada’s Commissioner of Competition

Matthew Boswell was appointed Commissioner of Competition on March 5, 2019, for a five-year term.

Mr. Boswell first joined the Bureau in January 2011 as Associate Deputy Commissioner, Criminal Matters. In 2012, he became Senior Deputy Commissioner, Cartels and Deceptive Marketing Practices. In July 2017, he began a one-year assignment as Senior Deputy Commissioner, Mergers and Monopolistic Practices.

As a Senior Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Boswell led numerous merger reviews and directed major investigations targeting criminal cartels, abuse of dominance and deceptive marketing practices.

Before joining the Bureau, Mr. Boswell was Senior Litigation Counsel in the Enforcement Branch at the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), where he primarily prosecuted securities fraud and related matters.

Prior to his work at the OSC, Mr. Boswell was an Assistant Crown Attorney in Toronto with the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario. As a Crown Attorney, he prosecuted all types of criminal offences.

Mr. Boswell has also worked in private practice and began his legal career at a Toronto law firm.
