Dr. Brett Belchetz (ER Physician and Co-founder/CEO of Maple) a former McKinsey consultant and current ER surgeon driving a new approach to accessing quality healthcare. Dr. Brendan Frey (Founder of Deep Genomics) has used new approaches to develop a deeper understanding of genetic determinants of disease. Dr. Peter Pisters (CEO of UHN) and his team are continually striving to find new ways to deliver high quality patient care. This panel will be moderated by Dr. Elaine Chin (Founder and Medical Director of Executive Health Centre and TELUS Chief Wellness Officer). Each of our panelists brings their unique and groundbreaking experience to share their insights on what we can expect to see in coming years.
Biographies
Dr. Brett Belchetz (ER Physician and Co-founder/CEO of Maple)
Brett is the CEO and Co-founder at Maple (getmaple.ca). He is also a practicing ER physician in Toronto, and previously worked as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company. He is a Senior Fellow at the Fraser Institute and works as an on-air medical expert for CTV. Brett is passionate about healthcare policy, and writes editorial content for the National Post as well as several other Canadian newspapers. In his spare time he is an avid runner and voracious reader of science fiction, living in downtown Toronto with his dog Matti.
Dr. Brendan Frey (Founder of Deep Genomics)
Brendan Frey is the CEO and a Co-Founder of Deep Genomics, a Co-Founder of the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and a Professor of Engineering and Medicine at the University of Toronto. He has made fundamental contributions in the areas of machine learning and genome biology, and is widely known for his work on using machine learning to understand how genetic variation leads to disease. Dr. Frey has received numerous distinctions and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a John C. Polanyi Fellow. He has consulted for several industrial research and development laboratories in Canada, the United States and England, and has served on the Technical Advisory Board of Microsoft Research. Dr. Frey’s former students and postdoctoral fellows include professors, industrial researchers and developers at universities and industrial laboratories from across Canada, the United States and Europe.
Dr. Peter Pisters (CEO of UHN)
Dr. Peter Pisters is the President & CEO of University Health Network, Canada’s leading research hospital which encompasses Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and the Michener Institute of Education at UHN. Prior to returning to Canada, Dr. Pisters held a number of clinical, administrative and leadership positions at MD Anderson Cancer Centre from 1994 with his last executive responsibilities being the management of 6 MD Anderson centers for care across metropolitan Houston. As a cancer surgeon he had a specialty focus in the management of sarcoma and gastrointestinal cancer patients. Dr. Pisters is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. He holds an M.Sc. in Health Care Management from Harvard University and is a 2014-2015 Executive Fellow in the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program of the U.S. Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology agency.
Dr. Pisters has a particular interest in the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance the quality and safety of patient care delivered at UHN and has led the work around Caring Safely, in partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children, which seeks to reduce medical errors to zero.
Dr. Elaine Chin (Founder/Medical Director of Executive Health Centre and TELUS Chief Wellness Officer)
Elaine Chin, MD, MBA is a North American trailblazer and recognized expert in personalized medicine which leverages biometric and monitoring technology along with predictive analytics to improve the health and performance of individuals.
Dr. Chin is the founder of Innovation Health Group and Executive Health Centre, a premiere personalized medicine practice in Toronto, Canada.
She is the Chief Wellness Officer at TELUS Communications. Her primary focus has been to deliver world class wellness programs to Canadians by integrating digital health technology and the science of precision medicine. Dr. Chin also sits on the GTA Community Board at TELUS.
Dr. Chin is a frequent speaker on executive health as a strategic tool in improving workplace productivity and protecting human capital.
She is a Heath Leader-In-Residence at the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor and she is part of an academic team that will drive results at the World Health Innovation Network (WIN).
Dr. Chin received her medical degree from the University of Toronto, Canada and her MBA from the same university’s Rotman School of Management.
She is the author of, “Lifelines – unlocking the secret of your telomeres for a longer, healthier life”, on Globe and Mail’s Top 10 Best Seller List.
