Kevin Carmichael, Matt Gurney, Jean-François Perrault & Shauna Sexsmith, moderated by Bruce Sellery
” Keeping on Top of the Markets and the Economy “
Mar 26, 2020
Every forecast for 2020 has already gone into the shredder. Experts can barely predict a week out, let alone a month. But it remains crucial to keep on top of the latest developments, and to find the right balance between planning for the future, and reacting quickly to the present.
For over forty seasons, Canadian Club Toronto and the National Post have gathered experts together for a forecast luncheon. Given this pandemic, we are gathering the panel again for a free, live, virtual discussion on the economy, the markets and the political issues that will affect Canadians in the year ahead.
This expert panel will be moderated by Bruce Sellery, Personal Finance Journalist and President of Canadian Club Toronto, and will feature:
• Kevin Carmichael – National Business Columnist, Financial Post
• Matt Gurney – Executive Producer-Comment, National Post
• J.F. Perrault – Senior Vice President and Chief Economist, Scotiabank
• Shauna Sexsmith – Senior Managing Director, Manulife
Biography:
Kevin Carmichael, National Business Columnist, Financial Post
Kevin Carmichael is the National Business Columnist at the Financial Post and a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation.
For more than a decade, he shifted between Ottawa and Washington, DC, writing about economics and politics for Bloomberg News and the Globe. For two years starting in the autumn of 2014, he was based in Mumbai, taking advantage of a chance to for a new vantage point on global affairs.
More recently, Kevin has written for Canadian Business, Maclean’s and FiveThirtyEight. He has been described as one of Canada’s leading business journalists, contributing to several award-winning projects at the Globe and Mail and earning a nomination for a Canadian National Magazine in Canada in 2010.
Matt Gurney, Executive Producer-Comment, National Post
Matt Gurney was a columnist for, and editor in, the National Post Comment section, from 2009 until 2016, including as Comment section editor for the final year of that period. His writings covered pretty much anything that he found interesting, but typically involved geopolitics, military and defence matters, space exploration, laws related to self-defence and gun control, health care and end-of-life issues and politics at any level. From time to time, when his editors allowed it, he also liked to inflict his sense of humour on unsuspecting readers. Sometimes they got the joke.
In 2015, Matt became host of National Post Radio on the SiriusXM satellite radio network. Airing every weekday morning from 7 to 10 Eastern on Canada Talks (Channel 167), the show features the best news, commentary, sports, business and entertainment stories from across Canada and around the world. He remained as host for the first year and a half of the program’s run, stepping down in fall of 2016. He also served as a columnist and radio host for Global News from 2016 to 2019. Matt has a B.A. and M.A. in military history. His hobbies and interests include classic rock music, golfing, cursing the Toronto Maple Leafs and, as all those who know him can attest, he is a shamelessly devoted fan of the original Star Trek series and the Civilization computer game franchise, to which he has already devoted far too much of his life.
He loves reading, and typically alternates between serious non-fiction works on the issues of the day and trashy novels about the end of the world. He also enjoys beer. He does not play an instrument, and sort of regrets that. Matt and his wife live in Toronto with their two children. They have been known to borrow dogs from relatives for weekends in cottage country. He wishes he got more sleep.
