Join Canadian Club Toronto as we host the Hon. Peter Bethlenfalvy, President of the Treasury Board of Ontario and Minister responsible for Digital and Data Transformation to discuss the government of Ontario’s response to COVID-19 and their plans to build a more accessible, digital, and responsive government.
Minister Bethlenfalvy is responsible for the government’s modernization initiatives, which help government service providers transform their operations by embracing modern technology, data-driven decision making, and more convenient, accessible digital options. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, this work has become even more important, because of the necessity to maintain social distancing guidelines and keep Ontarians safe and healthy.
Minister Bethlenfalvy will provide an update on the government’s recently announced budget and detail how key budget initiatives are being brought to life through Ontario Onwards: Ontario’s COVID-19 Action Plan for a People-Focused Government. He will speak about the province’s work building a nimble and responsive public service that can adapt to future shocks and will outline modernization initiatives and the government’s plan to make service delivery more convenient, reliable, and accessible in a post-COVID world.

The Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy
President, Treasury Board of Ontario and Minister Responsible for Digital and Data Transformation
Peter Bethlenfalvy is Ontario’s President of the Treasury Board, Minister responsible for digital and data transformation and MPP for Pickering—Uxbridge.
As President, he leads the Treasury Board Secretariat (TBS), the ministry responsible for reviewing and approving provincial expenditures to ensure the long-term fiscal sustainability of government services. TBS holds responsibility for the province’s internal audit and expenditure management efforts and is also the official employer of the province’s public servants. As such, Minister Bethlenfalvy is responsible for labour relations with the province’s public sector labour unions.
In order to strengthen fiscal management and better protect against future risks, Minister Bethlenfalvy led the creation of Ontario’s Office of the Comptroller General, a new Deputy Minister position within Treasury Board Secretariat – the first of its kind in any Canadian province.
As Minister responsible for digital and data transformation, Minister Bethlenfalvy leads the government’s transformation and modernization efforts that seek to make government services more convenient, reliable, and accessible to the people of Ontario. He is also Chair of the Audit and Accountability Committee and the Future State Modernization Committee.
Prior to entering public service, Minister Bethlenfalvy served in senior leadership roles for several financial institutions including as President and Chief Operating Officer of TD Securities (USA) and Co-President of DBRS.
Throughout his career, Minister Bethlenfalvy has been dedicated to ensuring long-term financial stability. In 2009, as Co-President of DBRS, his company led an extensive review of the Ontario Liberal government’s finances that culminated in a credit downgrade, expressing concerns that unsustainable spending would impact frontline services and hurt future generations.
He has served on the Board of Directors for many charitable organizations. In 2014, he joined the True Patriot Love Expedition to the magnetic North Pole in support of Canadian military families.
He holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from McGill University which included a year at the HEC School of Management, Paris; and a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Toronto.
