New Treatment Centre for Kids with Disabilities to Help Meet Growing Demand in Ontario
Mississauga, ON – April 27, 2018
ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development officially opened its new Mississauga facility today to help meet the growing demand for therapy, medical and support services for kids with disabilities and special needs. The location is one of three new purpose-built, state-of-the-art children’s treatment centres designed to provide a single point of care for families in need of ErinoakKids’ services.
“Opening this new Mississauga location is the most significant milestone in ErinoakKids history since opening our very first facility in Mississauga 40 years ago,” says ErinoakKids President and CEO Bridget Fewtrell. “As we have grown, so too has demand for our services and the need for appropriate spaces. Today, the design of our new Mississauga site and the opportunities it affords provides a place where children and youth can, for the first time, maximize their abilities in a space tailored to meet their needs.”
Located at 1230 Central Parkway W., the new 103,000 square foot facility is part of a multi-site project supported by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services that replaced 10 outgrown and rented facilities with three new buildings – one in Mississauga, another in Halton and a third in Brampton. The ErinoakKids project is the largest in the history of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and the first multi-site build of a children’s treatment centre in the province.
The new Mississauga facility will bring medical, therapy and support services under one roof to meet demand for services, which increase by 10 percent each year. The site boasts a gym, accessible playgrounds, an adapted fitness facility, two therapeutic playrooms, serenity gardens and a Longo’s Family resource centre. The site also houses unique features, including a controlled multisensory Snoezelen room to help reduce aggression and anxiety in children with autism and developmental disabilities.
“This new facility and all that it offers for clients and families will set a new standard of excellence in the delivery of services for kids with disabilities,” says ErinoakKids Board Chair James Sutherland. “Whether its physiotherapy, occupational therapy, autism services or speech and language services, the new facility will provide children and youth with the resources they need to achieve lifelong success.”
ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development is Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre, serving more than 16,000 children and youth annually who have physical and developmental disabilities, autism, communication disorders, blindness/low vision and hearing loss. Serving Halton, Peel and Dufferin County, our mission is to help our clients achieve optimal levels of independence, learning, health and well-being.
