New Women’s Shelter Opens in Elgin County

September 7, 2016 By Clive Tonge

Ontario Supporting Survivors of Domestic Violence with $2 Million Investment

A new womens shelter serving Elgin County opened today thanks to an investment of more than $2 million from the province.

The new Women’s Place Emergency Shelter replaces the previous 98-year-old single-family home which served women and their children who experienced domestic violence.

The new shelter is almost five times the size of the previous facility, with bedrooms that can better accommodate families and a large, secured yard where children can play safely. Generous community donations totalling $1.3 million have also made this new shelter possible.

Investing in the new Elgin County Women’s Shelter supports the Ontario government’s goal of ending violence against women and providing better supports for survivors, and also supports the government’s It’s Never Okay: An Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence and Harassment.

“For women who have experienced violence, a shelter is often the first step to rebuilding their personal and financial independence. This investment in Women’s Place is just one example of the Ontario government’s commitment to investing in services that help women and their children that have experienced domestic violence.”
~ Dr. Helena Jaczek – Minister of Community and Social Services ~

“All Ontarians deserve to live in safety. That’s why we have committed to our Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan with an investment of $41 million over three years, to change attitudes, support survivors and create safer communities. Today’s announcement is another important step toward creating a province where everyone is able to live free from the threat, fear or experience of violence.”
~ Tracy MacCharles – Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues ~

“Our government is dedicated to supporting women and their children who have experienced domestic violence. I’m proud that we’ve made an investment right here in Elgin County to ensure that there is a safe, secure and welcoming place for those escaping violence.”
~ Deb Matthews – Deputy Premier and MPP for London North Centre ~
