Province Providing Better Places to Learn with $360 Million Investment
Students will benefit from new schools opening and renovations across Ontario this fall, thanks to an investment of nearly $360 million from the province.
Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter was at the new Vista Hills Public School in Waterloo today to make the announcement, where students are arriving at the state-of-the-art facility for the first time.
For the 2016-17 school year, Ontario’s school boards are opening 29 new schools, while an additional 16 schools have undergone major additions and renovations. These modern facilities offer an enhanced learning experience and support student achievement and well-being for generations to come, while strengthening communities throughout Ontario.
Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province’s history – about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals. Since 2015, the province has announced support for more than 475 projects that are helping to keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life. Investing in better schools for better learning is part of the government’s economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. The four-part plan includes helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan is making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit in Ontario’s history and is investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.
“Great schools are the bedrock of Ontario’s publicly funded education system. Our government — working with local school boards — continues to deliver new and improved facilities that support student achievement and well-being with modern amenities and a high-quality learning environment.”
